After digging around in Wikipedia a bit, it looks like I may be able to set up a uPnP thing with hardware I already have, either through madalchemist's PS3 or the TV. I'm not sure yet because A) it's a type of tech I've never dabbled in before and B) my main desire is for audio and audio doesn't currently go through the TV or PS3 (well, game audio for the PS3 goes through the TV, but music goes from the DVD player to the awesome tuner to the speakers).

Further digging is required. And probably further headaches. And I should read enough that I actually know what the hell uPnP is, 'cause I haven't the foggiest.

If you're trying to hook the PS3 and the DVD and the TV up through one tuner, you can talk to T and/or D. They've both had our menageries filtered through a tuner, for years.

Awesome, thanks! That's certainly one configuration I may try. I'm still honestly a little baffled by the variety of choices. :P

I should also mention that we have a media pc in the living room, which is also hooked up through the tuner. It functions as an MP3 player, DVD Player, Blu Ray Player, and DVR. :)

I *think* that my first step will be using the housemate's PS3 -- I didn't realize all the stuff it could DO, 'cause I've never really used it, but it looks like all I need t do is play around with sharing on my PC and switch an audio cable around. It does require turning on one more component (TV, for interface) than current solution, but it doesn't require buying anything!

I think I"ll still want a media machine eventually, but for now, I'll play with what I have. And poke D or T if I get confused. :)

Wait, no, PS3 doesn't have Audio Outs, arrrrgggh. Time to research converters.

I think the PS3 uses HDMI out. You shoouuuld be able to get a splitter?

Yes, it does have HDMI out -- currently running to the TV -- so a splitter should do the trick! *runs off to NewEgg*

EDIT: Better yet, it has a peculiar Audio Multi Out (peculiar = I have never seen that jack before), and a cable that switches it to RCA audio is... 6 bucks. That's worth experimenting, I think! :D

This is so not what I expected t spend my day off doing, but it's kinda fun. :P
