I kind of waffle, because on the one hand I appreciate art, and can appreciate that this IS art -- it employed a lot of artists and artisans in what is honestly an impressive task. The magpie part of my own nature gets the appeal of handmade things, especially -- I like knowing something was made by human hands. And even as a non-religious person I can see the merit in updating the imagery to reflect a more global outlook. But it does seem to harken back to all the gold ornamentation in the Vatican, and the focus on pomp over poverty.
I wouldn't have twitched at a reprint (sharing art & literature among more people with less cost is what the printing press is all about, after all!).
(And yes, once you get into historic items it becomes a whole different ball game. I played a Guaneri violin once -- wow!)
