Hoo boy.

It can occasionally be difficult to predict one's limits in any particular situation (which doesn't negate all that crap I wrote about how you know you're own limits; you might not make a spot-on prediction, but your prediction is still going to be better than anyone else's).

Case in point: our gig yesterday versus the entire day at PAX, as far as my ankle is concerned.

I was sure that PAX would be a bit tough. Knowing I'd be walking around a large event for a full day after driving for an hour, I figured the drive home would be brutal and I'd have to really watch myself as the day wore on to make sure I wasn't getting cranky (I can keep going after my foot starts to hurt for miles, but since all my energy is directed at persevering I get cranky and/or stupidly unobservant).

Instead, PAX was totally fine. I was in less pain at the end of it than I usually am after a day of Folklife, and the drive back wasn't difficult until the last fifteen minutes or so.

Our gig yesterday -- less than half the time on my feet -- wiped me out. The difference is that I rolled my ankle once on the grass while we were setting up (which happens pretty frequently, but didn't happen at any time during PAX) and the floor was marble (we played in the capitol rotunda).

Oh, and almost every time I sat down at PAX I was able to get my foot elevated a bit, which was fantastic for preventing swelling. That doesn't work quite so well in a formal setting. Wearing a dress.

But mostly I think it was the marble. Even Erik was limping a bit by the time we went home. Dress shoes and an utterly unyielding surface are a bad combination.

Speaking of E, when we were leaving to go change after we'd done the sound check, another volunteer asked me if I was okay, because I was limping. E was full of snarky responses on the car ride back, and that was more irritating than the initial comment. He stopped after I explained that if I reacted with snark every time I heard that I would be very bitter far too often, mostly at people who legitimately mean well, and that their concern might be totally appropriate for someone else walking the way I was (in some situations -- I don't quite understand the need to comment when I'm clearly already being helped, but ah well. People like to feel they're doing something). I didn't have the heart to tell him that all his clever quips are almost as played out as the original comment. Heard it all before, sweety.

I suppose all of this is just a way to say I feel totally justified in sitting on my ass writing and playing video games today, despite the beautiful weather. Yesterday was a tigerbalm + aleve night, and this morning it took awhile to achieve something near normal locomotion, and those are good enough excuses for me.

Anyway, we rocked and we looked great! The event was a fundraising masquerade ball, and it was great to see all the office-worker-by-day types getting to play dress up. Some people really went for it. There was a guy in full period dress introducing himself as Ben Franklin (he kissed my hand. If someone introduces themselves as Ben Franklin and doesn't kiss your hand, you should be offended. At least if you're a lady identified person).

I wore the green dress, and the beak mask when I wasn't playing, and I gave E a facepaint mask (since he wears glasses). There were several photographers there, so we should have pics coming eventually. There's also an If I Had A Million Dollars picture I made E take after we got home and Monkey climbed on my shoulders while I was wearing the green dress (haven't you always wanted a Monkey?). I didn't think of grabbing a ketchup bottle until we'd started to get ready for bed, unfortunately.
