Plot is a tricky thing. When I first saw Totoro, I was amazed that there really wasn't that much going on in it. It's a fantasy movie, that's more slice of life with some magic thrown in. The climax is a little girl goes missing and everyone searches for her! I guess what I mean is that "something needs to happen" doesn't have to be something huge that changes the world.
Buck up! It really does take time to make money at it. Personal example: my mom. She's been writing for decades, and finally got her first book published last month! You just have to muddle through those rough spots.
