Dad and I got the garage door opening all framed in today! :D We'd hoped to get the sheathing done, too, but he needed a rest before a 4th of July dinner he's heading to, and we were both slowing down due to lack of protein (I'd planned on ordering pizza, but the local pizza place was closed for the 4th. I can't consume whatever crap I want, delivered to my door, because of a national holiday? UNAMERICAN, I TELL YOU!). The sheathing will happen Saturday, instead.

We changed some plans as we went, and found scary things and cool things.

Change: I'm going to build the north wall out of 2x4s, not fur it out to 2x6 like I'd planned. I'll lose a little insulation, but it'll be a lot quicker and easier, and it'll still probably be the best insulated room in the house.

Bad: That electrical panel. Holy shit, that panel. There was a single wire running into have a ganged 220 circuit and then running to... a single light. Or rather, what was a single light, but hasn't had a fixture since before I bought the house.

Good: The top 'trim' piece for the garage door opening, exposed to weather on one side and painted a few times and all, appears to be absolutely perfect vertical grain fir. We'd never waste wood of that quality on something like that now! Dad's going to plane it down for me and then we'll re-install it as a trim piece somewhere, probably the windowsill, where it can be shown off. :D

Bad: Plumb? What is plumb? This house is from 1960, we didn't do 'plumb' in the 60s. Cooool, man.

Good: The shingles underneath the aluminum siding are in really good condition. I thought I was going to have to side the re-done part with someone weird and temporary while I saved money to redo the whole house (eek!), but it looks like I can probably take off ALL the aluminum siding on the front, buy just enough cedar shingles to patch the changed area, and have it look better than it did before. Boo ya!

Bad (but not very): Plumb? What is plumb? This house is from 1960, we didn't do 'plumb' in the 60s. Cooool, man. Also, our 2x4s were totally bigger than your 2x4s, you 21st century losers.
