I think that even if I came up with the technobabble, it would allow transit too easily for this particular story idea. Or rather, it would allow it to too many different places too easily. With risk, sure, but once you figure it out you could choose to end up anywhere.
Unfortunately the more I think about it the more I lean towards a Sol system setting (plus potentially a future or recent past wormhole discovery), which stinks because it means people with actually scientific knowledge can check my work and point out where I screwed up. :P
BTW, where is your fatjack stuff set? I really want to see more of that. I like the flavor of it.
