Yeah, I kind of waffle, because on the one hand I appreciate art, and can appreciate that this IS art -- it employed a lot of artists and artisans in what is honestly an impressive task. And even as a non-religious person I can see the merit in updating the imagery to reflect a more global outlook. But it does seem to harken back to all the gold ornamentation in the Vatican, and the focus on pomp over poverty.
I wouldn't have twitched at a reprint (sharing art & literature among more people with less cost is what the printing press is all about, after all!), and the magpie part of my own nature gets the appeal of handmade things, especially -- I like knowing something was made by human hands. But the mind boggles at $150,000!
(And yes, once you get into historic items it becomes a whole different ball game. I played a Guaneri violin once -- wow!)
