You remind me of a song that G'kar of Babylon 5 starts singing when it becomes clear that not only are his people being systematically eradicated by the Centauri, but that he personally has to give up on their salvation and his in order to save them:

I think it's meant as a bit of a metaphor, as well as a memory he clings to in dark times. Not sure if it relates well to your "Little Fishies" but there it is.
