Colored comic-me

Aaand here's a little colored comic-me:



I started the sketch with light blue, and then each time I wanted to refine it or change something I used a darker and redder color so it would stick out (yes, I take the shotgun approach to sketches -- the right line is in there somewhere, I swear!). By the time I got to dark red/purple it was a sketch I liked, and I just went with variants on that for shading.

...and THEN I realised that I was fast approaching mauve, which happens to relate to the screenname I picked for fandom schtuffs, so I left it.

I might be able to find a good way to render your face. Then you could use it for reference. Wanna give it a shot?

OK! Going through your profile pics on your FaceBook, I think I see some of the things you're struggling with. Some of your more adorable facial features that are important in identifying you when you're animated don't translate so well in ink. But! I think we can drop those and simplify and it'll still look like you.

D'awww, thanks. But ain't that always the way? I find many of my favorite faces are my favorite because of their animation, rather than any frozen frame.

OK. I think this could be refined a bit more, but it's all a matter of subtle shifts, maybe moving your eyes down just a smidge, or moving your mouth just a bit, but that can be attributed to expression.



The important identifying features are your eyebrows, the bridge of your nose, the contour of your nostril where it meets your smile line, your smile line where it comes down to meet the edge of your mouth (the bit in between can be completely left out), and the contour of your lower lip! Everything else is somewhat flexible.

Oh, and I think your facial features could be darkened up a tad to better match the rest of the drawing!

It's really fascinating to see what someone else takes as 'the important bits.' Thank you!

Seeing this makes me think I went too plump on the far cheek, for sure.

I also really like your comic eyes. I don't think I've ever mentioned that to you...

EDIT: Also, it's interesting to note that there's always a discrepancy between 'how I'd draw myself as I think I am' and 'how I actually look.' Like listening to your own voice recorded.

Julie was commenting on your far cheek as well, but I feel like you did pretty well because it's in the palm of your hand. Maybe slim it down, but not too much. It's still gonna be deformed a bit with the weight of your head on your hand.
