Today I learned (over on ontd_political) that I've been brainwashed by the Muppets! Into Communism!

The more I thought about it, though, the more I realized they're correct. I HAVE been brainwashed by the muppets. That's why I say "BorkBorkBork" and flail whenever I enter a kitchen, and why I occasionally have an urge to shoot myself out of a cannon with the help of a chicken. Named Camilla.

Also, I've been singin "Mah na mah na" ever since I read the article.

Upshot? madalchemist and I are going to go see the new movie in SPAAAACE in the theater.

Mah na mah na.

I was even more surprised to read that the Disney Muppets were responsible.

IIRC the Muppets were invented way back in the 70s by Jim Henson - as that's when my oldest kids were indoctrinated with the Muppet virus. Disney was still only in cartoons back then...

Disney bought them in 2004, after Henson died, so apparently they can pretend the brilliance was their idea, now.

I suppose that does turn me off capitalism, a bit, but I don't think it's what the author meant. Oh, the irony of claiming anything owned by Disney is anti-corporate!

EDIT: and as my Dad pointed out, if Jim Henson were still allive, the muppets would almost certainly have something to say about this nonsense. :)

There seems to be a class of christians who see reds under all sorts of strange beds (I'm not one of them, BTW). Then there's this
guy who had a few harsh things to say about the Religious (far) Right in the US in his statement regarding the Occupy movement, including this tasty morsel - the charlatans of the Christian right, whose misuse of the Gospel to champion unfettered capitalism, bigotry and imperialism is heretical.

Sorry to get all politico/religious on your journal, but we have just re-elected a former forex trader to run the country for the next 3 years and I fear for the downtrodden in our country (which the OECD has just rated as one of the most increasedly disparate in income distribution since 1985.

It's perfectly okay to get politico-religious here. :) I'm sorry to hear that NZ is potentially headed more in that direction, though. I'll never understand the "I got mine, everyone else can starve" mentality.

If I had to guess, I'd say the anti-communist paranoia blended with certain right-wing strains of christianity around the same time US politics started trumpeting christianity in the 50s -- just to prove we were different from the godless communists. A policy marriage of convenience, as it were... since nothing I've ever read suggests there's actually any root similarity to base it on.

(except for those prosperity gospel folks -- pretty sure they were later).
