shadesofmauve: (can we fix it?)
It is very possible that I just lost everything I've worked on for the last year in a massive hard-drive failure.

I am not panicking.

Have perhaps attained zen.

Luckily, the total boot failure happened about fifteen minutes after I uploaded a jpg of the MESS art and sent myself the text file.

Let the HD cool down. Then, find a way to plug it in as a slave drive to another computer, try to run a disk check and repair program on it, then copy everything over to a new drive if that works.

If all that fails, you may have some luck with a professional, as they have slightly more sophisticated equipment. But it gets dicier from there.

Me? I once made the mistake of sending the computer in to get it fixed on warranty before attempting any of that, so my data is gone forever for sure. That's how I lost a graphic novel I was half way through working on. I quit drawing HFR for a year because of it.

Oh wow. I've been there. Honestly, truly been there. I only just yesterday finally decided to back up all of my writing to a jump drive, just because my luck is that shitty.

So, yeah. Totally feel the pain. Here's hoping that it's recoverable. *HUG*

Seconding [livejournal.com profile] fenmere.

A master, in techy-speak, is the hard drive the computer boots from. A slave isn't the boot drive.

Protip for back-ups? External hard drives. I quite like these (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148503). I have the 500GB version of the same model and it's taken everything I can throw at it. It's rattled around in my bag for two years and while my classmates' drives die yearly, mine's still trucking on.

Oh NO! Try taking it in for repairs asap, it might still be saveable.

Also, your icon for this made me laugh then very sad :( Losing your computer stuffs isn't fun.

Personally, I subscribe to the Google method of backups - keep three copies of everything, in 3 different places, like one at work, two at home on different machines, plus a travelling copy on an external drive in my backpack...

But then, I've lived on Operating Systems that died three times a day, amongst other environments over the 44 years I've been around computers...

Thanks for the reminder. I'll be backing up before the trip overseas!

Good luck and I hope you can recover everything.
