It is very possible that I just lost everything I've worked on for the last year in a massive hard-drive failure.
I am not panicking.
Have perhaps attained zen.
Luckily, the total boot failure happened about fifteen minutes after I uploaded a jpg of the MESS art and sent myself the text file.

Me? I once made the mistake of sending the computer in to get it fixed on warranty before attempting any of that, so my data is gone forever for sure. That's how I lost a graphic novel I was half way through working on. I quit drawing HFR for a year because of it.

Also, a few things have duplicates at work. I just realized I've probably got snapshots I never backedup or put on line, though, too... arghhh.
I'll see what I can salvage this evening.

Protip for back-ups? External hard drives. I quite like these (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148503). I have the 500GB version of the same model and it's taken everything I can throw at it. It's rattled around in my bag for two years and while my classmates' drives die yearly, mine's still trucking on.

Date: 2011-12-20 07:09 pm (UTC)From:I'm familiar with master/slave terminology -- I just have to either turn the back-up into a boot drive or get my housemate to let me use his machine. Maybe better to buy a whole new hard-drive and make that the boot, just for safety. Hmmm...

My friend-the-tech-wiz is coming down friday, and she has file recovery software and a good machine for it, so we'll see if there's anything to salvage.
